GHMC Demolishes Illegal Structures in Rukn-ud-Daula Lake at Shastripuram

Hyderabad: On Saturday, August 10, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) initiated the demolition of illegal structures built on the Rukn-ud-daula lake at Shastripuram Bahadurpura. These houses were constructed by encroaching on the Full Tank Level (FTL) of the centuries-old lake.

The demolition operation began early in the morning, with teams from the GHMC, supported by Cyberabad police officials, arriving at Shastripuram Kings Colony. The police cordoned off the area, preventing outsiders and local residents from approaching the demolition site. Heavy earthmoving equipment was used to dismantle the illegal structures.

The Rukn-ud-daula lake has been under threat from encroachers, with several activists working to protect it. During the operation, Bahadurpura MLA Mohd Mubeen attempted to stop the demolition but was detained by the police.

This demolition is part of ongoing efforts by local authorities to preserve the lake and prevent further illegal construction on its premises.

Rukn-ud-Daula Lake was constructed in 1770 by Nawab Rukn-ud-Daula – the Prime Minister of Sikandar Jah – the 3rd Nizam of Hyderabad. Reputedly originally 104 acres, the lake has been subject of controversy over claims of encroachment.
