Gaza Ceasefire Begins After Hostage Names Revealed

Palastine: A ceasefire in Gaza began on Sunday after Hamas shared the names of three Israeli hostages to be freed. The truce paused a 15-month-long war that has caused widespread destruction in the Middle East. Originally scheduled to begin earlier, the ceasefire was delayed until 11:15 am local time (09:15 GMT, 2:45 pm IST) following last-minute directives by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Delays in Implementation
The delay stemmed from multiple factors:

  1. Hostage List Submission: Netanyahu’s office demanded that the ceasefire would not commence until the list of hostages to be released was received.
  2. Mediators’ Role: Mediators had requested 48 hours of “calm” for the ceasefire to proceed smoothly, but continued Israeli airstrikes until the eleventh hour complicated the situation.
  3. Hamas’ Position: Hamas cited technical difficulties and ongoing Israeli bombings as reasons for the delay, publishing the list three hours after the scheduled truce start time.

Casualties During Delay
Between the original ceasefire time and the eventual implementation:

  • Israeli strikes reportedly killed 13 Palestinians.
  • The Gaza civil defense agency confirmed ongoing attacks by Israeli forces.

Hostages to Be Released
Hamas announced that the hostages to be freed included Romi Gonen, Doron Steinbrecher, and Emily Damari. After confirming the list, Israel approved the truce.

The ceasefire marks a temporary halt to the conflict but reflects the complex challenges in negotiation and implementation amidst active hostilities.
