Four from Hyderabad Following Google Maps Reached in Kerala Canal

Hyderabad: A group of four tourists from Hyderabad narrowly escaped after their car ended up submerged in a canal at Kurappanthara, Kottayam district, Kerala, early Saturday morning. The tourists were traveling in a Ford Endeavour from Munnar to Alappuzha, relying on Google Maps for directions when the incident occurred around 3 am.

Heavy rains had caused the canal to overflow, leading the driver to mistake it for a water-logged road. The SUV plunged into the canal after the driver made a left turn as directed by Google Maps. One passenger managed to escape through a window and alerted locals, who, along with the police, rescued the remaining passengers—a woman and two men.

The driver explained that he was driving at a slow speed of 10 kmph and only realized the mishap when the rear of the vehicle began sinking. Local media highlighted the absence of warning signboards or crash barriers in the accident-prone area. With the assistance of local residents and Fire and Rescue forces, the car was retrieved from the canal by Saturday noon.
