Cable Bridge at Durgam Cheruvu to be Opened by July End

Hyderabad:  GHMC efforts are being made to start the Durgam Cheruvu cable bridge by July end.

GHMC Chief Engineer said after the inauguration, the cable bridge will have vehicles from Mondays to Fridays only and they will be restricted on Saturdays and Sundays to provide a space for pedestrians and tourists. On the weekends, vehicles will need to be parked in the allotted parking area and people can walk on the bridge.

The GHMC Engineer-in-Chief supervised the key segment installation work. It is going to be the world’s longest span extra dosed cable-stayed bridge and the 238-meter long facility is being constructed with a cost of Rs.184 crore (25M USD).

The cable bridge will aid in reducing the distance from Jubilee Hills to Madhapur for corporate and IT employees and reaching their workplace comfortably. Now, with the installation of segments done, GHMC will be focusing on setting up illumination and railing works on either side of the structure.

Apart from facilitating smooth traffic flow in the area, the bridge will also serve as a tool to enhance the tourist prospects, the GHMC officials said.

Multi-colored lighting with various themes on cable bridge is a China-based technology designed with the crash barriers to operate the lightings automatically through special software. The LED lights being installed on the bridge are imported from China and the technology is popular abroad. The project has consumed around 9 Crores only for lighting which is designed with 40,000 LEDs on 26 stayed cables to shine bright with different invisible and colorful lights combination of Purple Green and White.

These LED lights are closely wrapped in aluminum plates and fitted inside the poles along the stayed bridge presenting the bright illumination and the source of the light would not be visible for the people. Water-resistant cables are fixed along the P1-P2 poles on the stayed bridge to protect an electric shock in the rainy season. Three-phase led points with 80.64W are fixed along the track, there will be a GPS controller, Distribution controller and Sd cardholder fixed to control the lightings. To make it more attractive, the source of the light shall be fixed through an inbuilt technology along with the crash barriers of the cable bridge, and the focus of the light is fixed exactly to the ground, which presents light and focus for the pedestrians from sideways.

Cable bridge railing and painting works are also pressed into fast track mode. Though Cable bridge construction works were finished long back, the major bridge is getting ready to wish Hyderabad with vibrant colors, around two to five percent of works of the bridge leftover except lighting works will be completed by the deadline of July 30, he added.

Apart from aesthetics, officials said, care was being taken on the safety and security of the bridge users and specially designed crash barriers were being set up. The ornamental steel hand railing will cover the bridge length of nearly 425 meters.

GHMC claimed that the Durgam Cheruvu project team successfully achieved three million safe man-hours and ensured the highest safety standards at the work.

In February, Installation Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering vice president Harshvardhan Subbarao who inspected the works at Durgam Cheruvu Bridge was impressed with the construction techniques adopted. He also inspected the side railing works and modern crash barriers on the structure and suggested GHMC to make a presentation about the bridge to bag international awards at different forums.
