Death Toll Reached 48, 7 Rescued, 5 Missing, Bus Falls in Canal in Sidhi, MP

Half of the victims were between 20 and 30 years and headed for Satna and Rewa for a government recruitment exam.

Sidhi, MP: The death toll reached to48 in Madhya Pradesh’s Sidhi district, after a bus fell off a bridge into a canal at around 7:30 AM on 16th February.

While seven passengers were rescued, the driver among five others are still missing.

Out of the 48 deceased, 25 are men, 21 women and two children. Half of the victims were between 20 and 30 years and headed for Satna and Rewa for a government recruitment exam, Umesh Joga, inspector general of police, Rewa, said.

A buss with 60 passengers fell off a bridge into a canal in Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh at around 7:30 AM on 16th February, after an overcrowded and over speeding bus run by a private agency plunged into a 20-foot-deep canal.

According to sources, that the driver of the 32-seater bus, which was carrying around 60 people, had taken a short-cut and was driving at a high speed.

State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) along with other agencies began the rescue operations immediate after accident.  

Earlier, PM Modi has approved ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh each from Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of those who have lost their lives due to the bus accident in Sidhi, Madhya Pradesh. Rs. 50,000 would be given to those seriously injured.

Further, the MP state government cancelled a key event in view of the accident, which was to be virtually attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
