Hyderabad: At least 1,000 patients are being treated in the government and private hospitals across Hyderabad for black fungus infection.

250 patients are admitted to Gandhi Hospital, 300 patients in Government ENT Hospital, and 6 patients in Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital for black fungus treatment.

A 200-bed facility is prepared at Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital for further medical recovery of the patients who have undergone surgery in the ENT Hospital.

more than 500 patients are being treated in private hospitals across Hyderabad and they are being monitored by the government-appointed nodal center.

According to ENT doctors, “There is a trinity at work in black fungus cases — uncontrolled diabetes, Covid19, and excessive and improper use of steroids. This trio is creating havoc in the body.

Treatment for mucormycosis (Black fungus) involves both surgical and medical treatment. Once the extent of the infection is ascertained through a CT scan, sinus surgery is taken up to remove the infection, and then the patients are put on a long course of oral antifungal medications.

“Every day, our ENT surgeons are conducting at least 20 surgeries. In the coming days, efforts are on to increase daily surgeries to at least 30 to 35 by arranging additional operation tables in ENT hospital, to complete the surgeries in the next seven to eight days.
