Tourist Accused of Desecrating the Holy Quran, Dragged from Police Station and Burnt Alive in Pakistan

Pakistan: A tourist in north-west Pakistan was killed by a mob after being accused of blasphemy. The incident occurred in Madyan, Swat district, where the man was dragged from a police station and lynched. Police had tried to protect him from the crowd that gathered following accusations of desecrating the Quran. Blasphemy is punishable by death in Pakistan, and accusations often lead to mob violence.

The event has sparked outrage on social media, with footage showing the victim’s body paraded through the streets and set alight. Police reported 11 injuries, including eight officers. Regional police chief Mohammad Ali Gandapur stated that a local mosque had incited the mob. Efforts to control the situation included clearing roads and dispersing crowds.

Authorities have initiated a case against hundreds of individuals involved, some as young as 13, and deployed additional security forces to the area. The incident has led tourists to flee the region, impacting local tourism.

Blasphemy laws in Pakistan, instituted under British rule and made more severe in the 1980s, often target minorities and result in violence even from unfounded accusations. Pakistan, predominantly Muslim, is among several countries with harsh penalties for blasphemy.
