Death Penalty for Rape, Child Abuse and Acid Attack in Maharashtra

Mumbai: To stop crimes against women and children in Maharashtra state, the Maharashtra state cabinet on Wednesday, 9th December, passed draft bill in the assembly with provisions of strict punishments which included death penalty, for crimes such as rape, child abuse and acid attack.

Bills will be tabled during the Winter Session starting from 14th December in the state Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council.

As per the draft bill…

  • Those accused of crimes such as rape, child abuse and acid attack will be sentenced to jail term for at minimum 10 years.
  • Punishment period may further extend to the rest of their natural lives or to death sentences in cases that have the attributes of being heinous in nature.
  • Acid attack surviving person will also be offered with Rs 10 lakh compensation for plastic surgery and facial reconstruction.
  • Time frame reduced from two months to 15 working days and for completion of trials to 30 working days from 60 days to for completing an investigation.
  • Special police teams and separate courts will be created for inquiry and trial for cases of crime against women and children.
