UP: Uttar Pradesh in Khushi Nagar stopped a wedding ceremony on Tuesday and took away both bride and groom couple to the police station.

Police acted on a phone call alleging that a Muslim man was marrying a Hindu woman after converting her, and later freed both after finding that both bride and groom are Muslims.

The groom, Haider Ali, 39, has claimed that the cops beat him with a belt and tortured him for hours at the Kasya Police Station. However, police denied the allegations of torturing.

The couple in the end got married next day on Wednesday after the brother of the bride, Shabeela Khatoon, 28, came from Azamgarh district and told the police, that family had no objection for their marriage.

Piyush Kant Rai, Circle Inspector said they acted hastily as “the atmosphere is tense, and the administration is strict about such cases”.
