Hyderabad: On Tuesday, heavy rains led to the Research Scholars mess at Osmania University (OU) in Hyderabad becoming inundated with ankle-deep water. Students had to eat their meals while standing in water. Videos of the situation, including one showing students using a raincoat to manually remove water, have been widely shared.
The waterlogging is attributed to severe water seepage from the rooftops, which has worsened over time. Initially, the problem was limited to a small area, but now the entire mess facility is affected. This issue extends beyond the dining area, impacting the storeroom and raising health concerns like potential mold growth and sanitation problems.
Research scholars have complained about the persistence of this problem despite multiple requests for repairs. Last year, similar flooding led to protests by students who ate their meals on the water-covered floor. Despite promises from the university administration, the issue remains unresolved, highlighting ongoing maintenance failures.
