“Goodbye, Wrestling”: Vinesh Phogat Retires Day After Olympics Disqualification

Paris/New Delhi: Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat announced her retirement from the sport a day after her disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024. Heartbroken by the disqualification, Vinesh revealed on social media that she no longer had the strength to continue. She was disqualified for being 100 grams overweight during the morning weigh-in for the women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling event. Despite protesting the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), her appeal was unsuccessful.

In her emotional post, Vinesh said, “Wrestling won the match against me, I lost…my courage is all broken, I don’t have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024. I will forever be in your debt.”

Her disqualification from the Paris Olympics devastated fans, including PM Narendra Modi, who expressed support for her on social media. While some encouraged her to aim for the 2028 LA Games, Vinesh feels she has lost her final battle and decided to retire. Cuba’s Yusneylys Guzman Lopez replaced Phogat in the final, where American Sarah Hildebrandt won the gold.

Phogat was set to lock horns with American Sarah Hildebrandt for the gold medal but the 29-year-old fell 100 grams short despite starving herself for a week and spending hours in the sauna to cut down to her competition weight.

Cuba’s Yusneylys Guzman Lopez replaced Phogat in the final where Hildebrandt won 3-0 to take the gold.
