Vijayawada Reels Under Severe Floods: Over 2.7 Lakh Affected, Rescue Operations Intensify

Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced that parts of Vijayawada are reeling under floods caused by unprecedented rainfall, overflowing rivulets, and heavy floodwater inflows. The deluge has disrupted the lives of more than 2.7 lakh people in the city.

  1. Extent of Flooding:
    Due to breaches in the Budameru rivulet on the outskirts of Vijayawada, floodwaters have inundated many areas, particularly Ajit Singh Nagar, Krishnalanka, Bhupesh Nagar, and Ibrahimpatnam. Thousands of residential buildings have been affected, with ground floors submerged. The flooding is compounded by heavy rainfall from catchment areas in Telangana and water inflows from major reservoirs like Nagarjuna Sagar, Srisailam, and Pulichintala.
  2. Rainfall and Flood Discharge:
    The Chief Minister reported that the region has received torrential rain of approximately 35 cm, and 9.7 lakh cusecs of floodwater was discharged from the Prakasam Barrage by 9 PM on Sunday. This level of flooding was last witnessed in 1998, when 9.24 lakh cusecs were released.
  3. Affected Areas:
    Ajit Singh Nagar is one of the worst-hit areas, with water levels reaching up to 10 feet, submerging ground floors and basements. Other severely impacted areas include Jakkampudi Colony and Krishnalanka. The flooding has left many residents stranded, and the distribution of food and relief materials is ongoing.
  4. Rescue and Relief Efforts:
    Director General of Police (DGP) Ch. Dwaraka Tirumala Rao mentioned the challenges in evacuating residents due to a shortage of boats. However, more boats and helicopters are expected to arrive by Monday, along with additional National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams to aid in rescue operations.
  5. Coordination with Central Government:
    Chief Minister Naidu contacted Union Home Minister Amit Shah to request assistance, including power boats and NDRF teams. Home Secretary Govind Mohan assured that 40 power boats and six helicopters would be sent to assist in the rescue operations.

The situation remains critical as the government and emergency services continue to manage rescue and relief efforts in Vijayawada.
