Bijnor UP: Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal members created chaos and took to the streets in protest against an interfaith marriage application in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor. The couple, Shivani Sharma and Wasim Ahmed had applied for marriage registration, following all legal procedures. However, local Hindu extremist groups vehemently opposed this move.
Upon learning of the couple’s application, the mob erupted in aggressive demonstrations, accusing them of involvement in ‘love jihad’—a conspiracy theory claiming Muslim men lure Hindu women into marriage for conversion. The protests escalated outside the Afzalgarh police station, where the mob threatened to escalate communal tensions if the marriage proceeded unchecked.
In response, the police assured the agitated crowd of an ongoing investigation and legal proceedings.
“The matter is under the cognizance of the local police. Legal proceedings are underway,” Said Bijnor police on X.
