Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam Judicial Custody Extends by Delhi Court till November 20

Khalid, who had been arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, told a court on Thursday, October 22, that he was not allowed to step out of his cell and it was in a kind of “solitary confinement”.

New Delhi: Former JNU scholar and activist Umar Khalid and JNU PhD student Sharjeel Imam judicial custody extended by Delhi court to November 20, 2020.

on September 13, The Delhi Police arrested Umar Khalid, on the charge of conspiring to engineer communal violence in Delhi during the visit to India of US President. He has also been charged with sedition and 18 other sections of the Indian Penal Code, including murder and attempt to murder.

Earlier in August, Sharjeel Imam was arrested by Delhi Police in connection with the riots in the city in February. Imam had been booked under sections of the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

The Delhi police had sought the extension of both the men’s judicial custody for 30 days.

Umar Khalid’s lawyer Trideep Pais and Sharjeel Imam’s lawyer Surabhi Dhar both argued that there was no question of the accused absconding.

Khalid, who had been arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, told a court on Thursday, October 22, that he was not allowed to step out of his cell and it was in a kind of “solitary confinement”.

The court ultimately asked the Tihar Jail Superintendent to treat Khalid at par with other prisoners. These included providing him with books, warm clothes in view of the impending winter and time out of his cell.
