India Welcomes UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran,  and Ethiopia joining BRICS+

Moscow: India has warmly welcomed the addition of Egypt, Iran, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia to the BRICS group. This marks the first time these nations attended a key BRICS meeting, which was hosted by Russia in Nizhny Novgorod. Indian delegation was led by senior diplomat Dammu Ravi at the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, expressed India’s enthusiastic support for the new members on social media, highlighting the significance of the expanded BRICS family. This meeting followed the 2023 BRICS expansion, making Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE full members alongside Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

The External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar was unable to attend the meeting due to his reappointment coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent swearing-in ceremony. Russia has taken over the chairmanship of BRICS for 2024, planning more than 250 events, including a major BRICS summit in Kazan in October 2024

India’s senior diplomat Dammu Ravi led the Indian delegation at the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Nizhny Novgorod, in western Russia.

“A significant meeting in the format of expanded BRICS family. India wholeheartedly welcomes the new membership,” MEA  spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on X.
