Two City Women Lost Money in Online Matrimonial Site Fraud

Hyderabad: Two women for Hyderabad who was looking for a life partner to get married and registered themselves with a matrimonial site, were duped by the fraudsters of thousands of rupees.

A woman from Basheer Bagh registered with a matrimonial portal and got a reply from one person who presented himself an NRI from Netherlands. The woman after able to communicate with him on the site for a few days, gave her phone number and they had conversations over WhatsApp.

A few weeks ago, NRI told her he was sending her a gift. A day later, she got a phone call from a woman who claimed to be a Customs officer from Delhi and asked the woman to pay Rs.18,000 as customs clearance fee for the gift parcel. After two days, she again received a call from ‘Customs officials’. saying the parcel contained Euros and demanded Rs.55,000 for clearing it, said KVM Prasad, ACP, Cybercrime (Hyderabad).

The woman realized she was cheated after paying the money and she lodged a complaint with the Cybercrime police who have registered a case and are investigating.

Another woman a doctor, was cheated in a similar way by one person who presented himself as NRI doctor from Holland. The woman transferred Rs. 90,000 to the bank accounts provided by the fraudsters who presented themselves to as Customs officials. Following a complaint made by the doctor, the police have booked a case and are investigating.
