Donald Trump Becomes First Former US President Convicted of Felony Crimes

New York: Donald Trump became the first former U.S. president to be convicted of felony crimes as a New York jury found him guilty of falsifying business records to influence the 2016 election through hush money payments to porn actor Stormy Daniels. The jury deliberated for 9.5 hours over two days, convicting Trump of all 34 counts he faced. Trump, who plans to appeal, called the trial “rigged” and maintained his innocence.

The conviction exposes Trump to potential prison time, though the exact punishment remains unclear. Despite this, Trump continues to seek the White House, with the sentencing set for July 11, days before the Republican National Convention. The charges carry up to four years in prison, but it’s uncertain if prosecutors will seek imprisonment.

The case, one of four felony indictments against Trump, is significant as it might be the only one concluded before the November election. The trial centered on hush money payments recorded as legal expenses, which prosecutors argued was an unlawful attempt to mask the true purpose. Trump’s legal team contended the payments were for legitimate legal services.

Trump, who did not testify, denied the sexual encounter with Daniels and argued that the payments were motivated by personal, not political, considerations. The trial featured testimony from key witnesses, including Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen, who detailed the hush money scheme and Trump’s involvement.

The conviction may provide Democrats with arguments against Trump while reinforcing his claims of being politically targeted. Despite the conviction, Trump’s political career has survived numerous scandals and legal challenges, and he continues to have strong support from Republican leaders.
