Hyderabad Traffic Police Crack Down on Wrong-Side Driving, Booked 688 Cases on Wednesday

The Hyderabad traffic police are set to take stricter action against wrong-side driving, with plans to book criminal cases under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), P Vishwa Prasad, emphasized that driving on the wrong side endangers lives and causes traffic slowdowns and gridlocks on busy roads.

During the recent special drive, the traffic police seized 1,000 vehicles and highlighted the risks associated with driving in the wrong direction. Moving forward, they intend to file criminal cases to create greater awareness and compliance among citizens.

Additionally, the traffic police are targeting other violations, such as using cell phones while driving and triple riding. In the last ten days, approximately 3,400 cases were booked for triple riding and over 2,000 for cell phone use while driving.

The Hyderabad traffic police booked 688 cases for wrong-side driving in a special drive on Wednesday, August 7. The majority of these cases involved two-wheelers (659 cases), with additional cases against three-wheelers (21 cases) and four-wheel vehicles (8 cases).

Over the past year, wrong-side driving has resulted in 8 deaths and 150 injuries in Hyderabad. However, in 2024 up to July, the numbers have decreased, with 1 death and 128 injuries reported. Despite claims of emergencies by violators, the Traffic Police stress that such actions endanger motorists and pedestrians.

Offenders face fines of Rs. 1100 or can be booked under Section 281 BNS, potentially leading to imprisonment of up to six months or a fine of Rs. 1000. Citizens are encouraged to report violations via the Hyderabad Traffic Police’s Facebook page, X (Twitter), and the Traffic Helpline at 9010203626.
