The arrested cops are Somanna of Gandhinagar PS, Sai Ram of Saifabad PS, and Ashok, a home guard of Gandhinagar PS.
Hyderabad: Three policemen—Somanna from Gandhinagar police station, Sai Ram from Saifabad police station, and Ashok, a home guard from Gandhinagar police station—were arrested for their involvement in a mobile phone theft ring. Along with these officers, six other individuals were also arrested by the Punjagutta police.
The main orchestrator of the theft ring is Rahul Kumar Yadav from Jharkhand, who remains at large. Yadav directed gang members to different cities across India, including Hyderabad, Surat, Lucknow, Ranchi, Belur, Chennai, Varanasi, Nagpur, and Patna, to steal mobile phones from crowded areas like markets and metro trains. After amassing about 50 stolen phones, the gang would inform Yadav, who would then send someone to collect the devices and transport them to the Bangladesh border for sale.
The arrest operation was initiated after several complaints of mobile phone thefts were reported in Hyderabad’s metro trains and markets. The arrested thieves include Gazi, Shahnawaz, Govinda Kumar, Jugeshwar, Jonu Kumar, Mukhtar Shaik, and a juvenile. The three arrested policemen allegedly accepted bribes to facilitate the release of these thieves whenever they were apprehended.
The police are now investigating the potential involvement of other police personnel in the network. A special team formed to tackle the thefts discovered that the gang members would distract victims and swiftly pass the stolen phones among themselves to avoid detection. The stolen phones were then transported to Jharkhand and West Bengal, and ultimately sold to buyers near the India-Bangladesh border. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend four more absconding members of the gang.
