Hyderabad’s iconic landmarks Moazzam Jahi Market, which has been renovated completely, will be open to public from August 15.
The historic structure was lying in a poor condition for several years and now it is renovated Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD).
The heritage MJ Market structure has now been restored with new flooring and architectural lights by clearing unauthorized structures within the premises, making more space for travelers to enjoy the magnificence of the structure. The entire roof has been replaced layer by layer.
A new drainage system was installed to drain out the rainwater, which used to stagnate inside the inner circle. GHMC completed the restoration works by hiring in a team of conservation architects and trained laborers.
The MA&UD Principal Secretary Arvind Kumar on Tuesday night tweeted “MJ Market will be opened to all on August 15”.
Moazzam Jahi Market was constructed in 1935 during the reign of the last Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan. It was named after his second son Moazzam Jah. The building is made of granite and has white domes, constructed in a style like that of the High Court.
Lately, the market housed fruit and vegetable sellers mostly and some of the shops are still standing. With a couple of ice cream shops got added to the complex but unfortunately, the marketplace lost its charm due to lack of maintenance.
The market was frequently flooded with sewage water and heaping amounts of waste that was rarely cleaned out. The walls were peppered with hoardings and flexes. All of this had almost rendered it impossible for people to go into the market.
During the lockdown, the heritage sites around the city are not open to the public now. But once the lockdown lifts, Hyderabadis will be surprised with Moazzam Jahi market’s new look.
IT minister of Telangana took to Twitter and appreciated Principal Secretary Arvind Kumar and his team for their efforts in this restoration drive.
