Hyderabad: The Telangana government is expected to host its annual state iftar party on March 24, continuing a decade-long tradition during Ramzan.
The event, typically held at Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium, is estimated to cost ₹70 crore. However, city activists have opposed the expenditure, urging the government to redirect funds toward minority education and development.
In a letter to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, activists Lubna Sarwath, Anwarullah Khan, Syed Ismail, and others requested the reallocation of funds for education, employment, and empowerment. They argued that extravagant state-funded iftars contradict Islamic teachings, citing that Prophet Muhammad never endorsed such lavish spending.
Meanwhile, the Welfare Party of India (WPI) has announced a boycott of the state iftar, citing unfulfilled promises and the absence of Muslim representation in the cabinet. WPI Telangana president Syed Kamal Ather and general secretary Advocate Mohammad Waseem urged Muslim Congress leaders to skip the event in protest against the Congress government’s alleged neglect of minority concerns.
The Telangana government has yet to make an official announcement regarding the iftar date.
