Tennis and Badminton Stars of Hyderabad


The Tennis and Badminton Women players from Hyderabad including Sania Mirza, Saina Nehwal, and P. V. Sindhu make the Hyderabad a city of Sports not only in Indian but worldwide.

Sania Mirza – Tennis

Sania Mirza daughter of Imran Mirza a sports journalist from Hyderabad, born in 1986. She is a faraway relative of Gulam Ahmed (Indian Cricket Captain) and Asif Iqbal (Pakistani Cricketer).

She studied in Hyderabad bases prestigious girl’s day school “Nasr School” and graduated from St. Mary’s College. She started playing at the age of 6, she was trained by famous coaches Imran Mirza (her father) and Roger Anderson.

Mirza’s strength is Tennis is she is very offensive baseliner and plays powerful groundstrokes.

Sania Mirza won Grand Slams Women double Wimbledon in 2015, the US Open in 2015, and Australian Open in2016. Mirza Won Mixed Doubles Australian Open in 2009, French Open in 2012, and US Open in 2014. Sania Won Girls Double Wimbledon in 2003.

She was honored by Arjuna Award in 2002, WTA New Comer of the year in 2005, Padma Shri, in 2006, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 2015, BBC top 10 Inspiring Women in 2015, Padma Bhushan in 2016 and NRI of the Year in 2016.

In addition to Tennis, she plays nice cricket and she is a great swimmer.

Sania Mirza was earlier engaged with her family friend Sohrab Mirza Later She get married to Shoaib Malik and Pakistani Cricketer in 2010 in Hyderabad.

Sania managed a Tennis academy in Hyderabad, Grand Slam Winners Cara Black and Martina Navratilova once visited her tennis academy in Hyderabad.

Telangana State Government Nominate her as the Brand Ambassador of Telangana.

Saina Nehwal – Badminton

Saana Nehwal daughter of Harvir Singh Nehwal a Ph.D. in Agricultural science, born in 1990 In Hisar. After her father gets transferred to Hyderabad.

Her Mother Usha Rani is also a badminton player played for Haryana State.

She completed Grade 12 from St. Ans College for Women in Hyderabad.

She started playing Badminton at the age of 8. 

She won 24 international Titles, she reached world number one ranking in the year 2015,

Saina Nehwal wins Summer Olympics Bronze in 2012. Saina won Commonwealth Games Bronze in 2006, Gold in 2010 and 2018. Nehwal Won Commonwealth Youth Games Silver in 2004 and Gold in 2008.

She was honored by Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjun Award, and later Padma Shree in year 2016.

In addition to playing badminton, Saina has a brown belt in karate.

She married to Parupally Kashyap (badminton player) in 2018.

P. V. Sindhu – Badminton

Pusarla Venkata Sindhu daughter of P V Ramana, born in 1995 in Hyderabad.

She studied St. Ans College for Women in Hyderabad and Auxilium High School.

Her parents both father and mother play volleyball, Sindhu started playing Badminton at the age of 8.

She was honored by Arjuna Award in the year 2013, Padma Shri, in 2015, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in the year 2016, and Padma Bhushan in the year 2020.

Sindhu wins Olympic Games Women’s Single Silver Middle in 2016. Badminton World Champion Bronze in 2013 and 2014, Silver in 2017 and 2018 and Gold in the year 2019. Asian Games Silver in 2018, Asian Championship Bronze in 2014. Commonwealth Youth Game Girls Single Gold in 2011. Asian Junior Championship Bronze in 2011 and Gold in 2012.
