Telangana to Face Power Shortage Due to Kothagudem Thermal Plants Shutdown

Hyderabad: The unexpected shutdown of the Bhadradri Thermal Power Station (BTPS) and a boiler tube leak at the Kothagudem Thermal Power Station (KTPS) in Paloncha is causing a significant power shortage in Telangana. The combined shutdowns have halted 1320 MW of power generation.

Officials report a major shortfall in the State grid supply due to these disruptions. Specifically, an 800 MW unit at KTPS is down due to a boiler tube leak, with another 250 MW unit under annual maintenance. At BTPS, a 270 MW unit was damaged by lightning.

The stoppage affects the daily power supply, as over 4,000 MW is typically supplied to the Genco grid. The Genco must now seek alternative power sources to meet the state’s demand.

According to TGGenco Director (Thermal) Lakshmaiah, the BTPS unit will take two months to be restored, having incurred a Rs. 25 crore loss from the lightning strike. Repairs will involve Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). The KTPS boiler leak, affecting 800 MW, will take five days to fix. The 250 MW unit under maintenance will resume by the end of July. In the interim, Genco will procure power from various sources to meet the state’s needs.
