New Delhi: A tragic incident occurred in Delhi where two teenagers shot and killed a 55-year-old doctor at Nima Hospital in Jaitpur. The suspects, believed to be 16 or 17 years old, had visited the hospital the previous night for treatment. One returned for a dressing change for his injured toe. After receiving the treatment, they requested a prescription and went to the cabin of Dr. Javed Akhtar, a Unani medicine practitioner. Moments later, the hospital staff heard a gunshot and found Dr. Akhtar bleeding from a head wound.
Police believe it was a targeted killing, possibly with a prior visit to the hospital serving as a recce. CCTV footage is being reviewed to identify the attackers.
This incident follows another shocking case from two months earlier, where a 31-year-old doctor in Kolkata was raped and murdered while on night duty. In response to that case, nationwide protests led the Supreme Court to form a National Task Force to enhance the safety of healthcare workers on duty.
