New Delhi: Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is set to receive four ministerial positions in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new cabinet, while Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) will get two, according to sources. The likely TDP ministers include Ram Mohan Naidu, Harish Balayogi, and Daggumalla Prasad. From JD(U), Lalan Singh and Ram Nath Thakur are the proposed names.
According to media sources. the decisions were made at a National Democratic Alliance (NDA) meeting ahead of the cabinet’s swearing-in. The TDP, having secured 16 Lok Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh, had requested four portfolios and the parliamentary speaker’s post. JD(U), with 12 seats, asked for two cabinet positions.
This arrangement follows the NDA winning 293 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha, as the BJP fell short of the 272 needed for a majority, securing only 240 seats. This scenario necessitated coalition negotiations reminiscent of the pre-2014 era.
There were speculations about a possible reunion between Nitish Kumar and the INDIA bloc after the BJP’s shortfall, but sources close to Kumar dismissed this, emphasizing the ongoing talks with the BJP over ministerial allocations.
