Taliban and Afghan Govt. Historic Peace Talks Started in Qatar

Experts, envoys, and political analyst say that even though bringing both Taliban and Afghan Government to the negotiating table was an accomplishment in itself, that this does not mean the road to peace will be easy.

Doha: Negotiations between the Afghan administration and Taliban start in Doha (Qatar) on Saturday with the goal of putting an end to about two decades of a conflict that killed tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians.

A delegation of leading Afghans left Kabul for Doha on Friday, 11th September.

Experts, envoys, and political analyst say that even though bringing both Taliban and Afghan Government to the negotiating table was an accomplishment in itself, that this does not mean the road to peace will be easy.

Negotiations to broker the comprehensive peace deal were foreseen in a troop withdrawal pact signed between the United States and the Taliban in February this year to find a political solution to end the decades long war.

The talks were supposed to start in the March but were repeatedly postponed by a dispute over the prisoner exchange agreed in the February US-Taliban deal, as well as violence in the country.

After delays of months, a dispute over the Taliban’s demand for the immediate release of 5,000 prisoners had been resolved this week.
