“Sometimes Governments Last Only A Day” – Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata: Mamata Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress chief, has strongly hinted that the INDIA bloc could soon assume power at the Centre, suggesting that governments can be short-lived. Following a Trinamool Parliamentary Party meeting, she announced that her party would boycott Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony, labeling the new government as “illegally and undemocratically” formed.

The BJP won 240 Lok Sabha seats in the recent elections, falling short of the 272 needed for a majority, thus relying on allies like Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP and Nitish Kumar’s JDU. Banerjee criticized the BJP’s failure to achieve a majority on its own and implied potential governmental instability, stating, “Sometimes, governments last only for a day… Anything can happen.”

The INDIA alliance secured 232 seats, with strong performances from Congress, the Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, and the DMK, but remains short of a majority. Despite this, INDIA bloc leaders, including Congress’s Mallikarjun Kharge, have suggested that the alliance might take steps to fulfill the public’s desire for an alternative to BJP rule.
