35 Foot Tall Shivaji Statue Inaugurated by PM Modi 8M Ago Collapses in Maharashtra

Maharashtra: On August 26, 2024, a 35-foot statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, which had been inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December 2023, collapsed at the Rajkot Fort in Sindhudurg, Maharashtra. The statue, depicting Shivaji Maharaj wielding a sword in an attacking pose, fell due to strong winds and adverse weather conditions. The incident occurred around 12:30 PM, causing the statue to break into multiple pieces.

Cause and Immediate Response: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde attributed the collapse to the strong winds and heavy rainfall that the region had been experiencing. However, opposition parties, including Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP, criticized the Maharashtra government, alleging that poor construction quality and possible corruption were to blame. They demanded a thorough investigation into the incident and questioned the role of the contractor involved in the statue’s construction.

Government’s Commitment: State Minister Deepak Kesarkar assured that a new statue would be erected at the same location. He also mentioned that a detailed investigation would be conducted to determine the exact cause of the collapse. The government emphasized that the statue was intended as a tribute to Shivaji Maharaj’s contributions to maritime history, and they promised to address the situation effectively.

Political Fallout: The collapse of the statue has sparked significant political controversy. Opposition leaders have accused the government of focusing more on the inauguration event, which was attended by PM Modi, rather than ensuring the statue’s structural integrity. They also criticized the government’s handling of public resources and demanded accountability from those responsible for the statue’s construction
