Secunderabad Cantonment Board To Merge with GHMC, Guidelines Issued

Hyderabad: The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) is undergoing a significant transition with the planned merger of its civil areas into the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). This process, guided by the Defence Estates Organisation and overseen by Union Defence Secretary A Giridhar, aims to address long-standing issues faced by residents of the cantonment.

Residents of the SCB have expressed mixed reactions. While many support the merger due to the prolonged challenges they have faced, some remain cautious, fearing bureaucratic delays. The merger seeks to resolve critical issues such as access to roads, which has been a significant problem due to the army’s control over key connecting roads between Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Frequent road closures by the army have caused considerable inconvenience to commuters, forcing them to take longer detours.

The Federation of Northeastern Colonies of Secunderabad, represented by Secretary CS Chandrasekhar, emphasizes the importance of clear discussions on road access during the merger talks. The proposed guidelines suggest that the Cantonment Board (CB), in consultation with Local Military Authorities (LMA) and the State Municipality, should manage traffic restrictions to prevent increased traffic through the cantonment area post-merger.

In addition to transport issues, residents face challenges related to strict construction regulations, difficulties in acquiring loans, and increased charges under union regulations. Jeetendra Surana, secretary of the Secunderabad Cantonments Citizens’ Welfare Association, highlights concerns about defining the boundaries of civil areas, given the widespread presence of army buildings. The association has called for the State government to assert its rights over all cantonment lands and merge civil lands with the GHMC to resolve these issues comprehensively.
