Reformist Masoud Pezeshkian Wins Iran’s Presidential Election, Defeats Hard-liner Jalili

Tehran: Masoud Pezeshkian, a reformist candidate, has won Iran’s presidential runoff election by defeating hard-liner Saeed Jalili. Pezeshkian garnered 16.3 million votes compared to Jalili’s 13.5 million. He campaigned on promises to engage with the West and ease enforcement of Iran’s mandatory headscarf law. Despite his support for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Pezeshkian faces challenges from a predominantly hard-line government, regional tensions including the Israel-Hamas conflict, and Western concerns over Iran’s nuclear program. The election, marked by a turnout of around 50 percent, follows a low-turnout first round and has implications for Iran’s foreign policy and internal reforms.
