Ahmedabad: Gujarat Minister of State for Home, Harsh Sanghavi, announced on Monday, May 27, that the identities of nine victims from the TRP Game Zone fire in Rajkot have been confirmed through DNA analysis. The fire, which broke out on May 25, claimed 27 lives, including those of children. The bodies were charred beyond recognition, necessitating the use of DNA profiling by a forensic science lab for identification.
The process has been slow, causing frustration among families waiting at Rajkot Civil Hospital to collect their loved ones’ remains. Sanghavi visited the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Gandhinagar and reported that nine victims had been identified by matching their DNA with that of their relatives. The FSL staff have been working tirelessly, canceling holidays and travel plans to expedite the process.
Forensic experts collected bone samples from the charred bodies, as collecting blood samples was impossible. To speed up the process, an air ambulance was deployed to transport samples to Gandhinagar, reducing travel time significantly. The DNA matching process, which started early Sunday, involves a nine-step procedure that typically takes 48 hours per sample.
Currently, eight more samples are under analysis. Sanghavi assured that families would be notified as soon as identification reports are available.
In the aftermath, the state government has transferred Rajkot’s police commissioner Raju Bhargava, Additional Commissioner of Police Vidhi Choudhary, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-2) Sudhirkumar Desai, and the city’s civic chief. These officials were transferred without postings, as per a notification from the state home department.
