Hyderabad: On September 16, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy unveiled a statue of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi at the Telangana Secretariat in Hyderabad. This event occurred amid political tensions between the ruling Congress and the opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). The BRS opposed the statue’s installation, with BRS working president KT Rama Rao (KTR) criticizing the decision.
In August, a verbal clash erupted between Revanth Reddy and KTR when the Chief Minister announced his plans to erect the Rajiv Gandhi statue in front of the Secretariat. The site had previously been designated for the “Telangana Talli” statue by the former BRS government. This led to heated exchanges between the leaders over the appropriateness of the new statue.
KT Rama Rao’s Criticism of Congress Over Rajiv Gandhi Statue
BRS working president KTR strongly opposed the installation of Rajiv Gandhi’s statue, claiming that it disrespected Telangana’s history and identity. The Telangana Talli statue, representing the aspirations of four crore people and symbolizing the Telangana movement, was originally planned for the site.
KTR accused the Congress of attempting to erase Telangana’s legacy and criticized them for placing Rajiv Gandhi’s statue, which he referred to as “Rahul Gandhi’s father’s statue,” in such a significant location. He warned that the people of Telangana, who fought for statehood, would not forgive this insult, as it overshadowed the sacrifices made during the Telangana movement. He also stated that the Congress was playing selfish politics by undermining Telangana’s self-respect for political gain.
KTR’s remarks underscored the ongoing tension between the Congress and BRS, with the placement of the Rajiv Gandhi statue becoming a flashpoint in their political rivalry.
Revanth Reddy Lauds Rajiv Gandhi’s Reforms
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy stated that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi brought about several revolutionary changes with the noble vision of paving a golden path for India’s future. He made these remarks while unveiling Rajiv Gandhi’s statue in front of the Telangana Secretariat, with state ministers and public representatives in attendance. During the event, Revanth Reddy recalled the sacrifices made by Rajiv Gandhi and his family for the nation.
He highlighted Rajiv Gandhi’s reforms aimed at empowering the youth by lowering the voting age to 18, introducing the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments to strengthen local governance, advocating for women’s reservations in legislatures, and steering the country into the 21st century through a technological revolution.
The Chief Minister also praised the Nehru family, noting that Jawaharlal Nehru, after becoming Prime Minister, prioritized education and irrigation, leading to projects like Bhakra Nangal, Nagarjuna Sagar, and Srisailam, which are testaments to his vision. He credited Nehru for integrating 563 princely states and safeguarding the country’s unity.
Revanth Reddy also recalled Indira Gandhi’s contributions, including bank nationalization, the abolition of royal privileges, and the introduction of land ceiling laws that redistributed land to the poor, which uplifted the Dalits, tribals, and weaker sections. He highlighted her role in fulfilling the dreams of the underprivileged and recognizing the Lambadas as Scheduled Tribes.
Lastly, the Chief Minister expressed regret that despite more than a decade since the formation of the Telangana state, the statue of Telangana Talli (Mother Telangana) had not been installed. He announced plans to place the statue of Telangana Talli at the main entrance of the Secretariat on December 9, the date marking the Telangana statehood announcement.
