New Delhi: In a notable gesture, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, urged people to refrain from using derogatory language towards former Union minister Smriti Irani. Irani had defeated Gandhi in Amethi in 2019 but lost to Gandhi family loyalist Kishori Lal Sharma in the recent general election by over 1.6 lakh votes. Gandhi, now the MP from Rae Bareli, emphasized the importance of respect and dignity in political discourse. His statement received mixed reactions; Congress leaders praised his stance, while BJP leaders criticized it. Irani, after her loss, expressed gratitude for her party’s support and the government’s achievements.
On Wednesday, Ms Irani vacated her official bungalow at 28 Tughlak Crescent in Lutyens’ Delhi as she is no longer an MP.
Rahul Gandhi wrote on X as …
Winning and losing happen in life. I urge everyone to refrain from using derogatory language and being nasty towards Smt. Smriti Irani or any other leader for that matter. Humiliating and insulting people is a sign of weakness, not strength.
