Hyderabad: The power department in Telangana is introducing a QR code system on electricity bills to simplify payment procedures following the suspension of third-party app payments. The Telangana Northern Power Distribution Company Ltd (TGNPDCL) has launched this initiative, enabling users to scan a QR code on their bills for swift payments via debit/credit cards, UPI, and net banking. Initially tested in Warangal and Bhupapally, the system will soon roll out across districts including Karimnagar, Warangal, Adilabad, Khammam, and Nizamabad. Each QR code is unique and usable only once, with monthly regeneration scheduled. The Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Ltd (TGSPDCL) is also set to adopt a similar system soon. Due to RBI directives, third-party apps are no longer viable, prompting reliance on traditional payment methods like Meeseva centres statewide.
Service providers such as PhonePe, Paytm, Google Pay and banks have stopped accepting the electricity bills of the TGSPDCL as per RBI directions.
