Pollution in Hyderabad: Air Quality Impact on Health

Hyderabad’s current Air Quality Index (AQI) is 69, placing it in the “moderate” category. However, some city areas experience poorer air, significantly impacting residents’ health.

AQI Breakdown and Health Implications
The AQI provides a standardized measurement for air quality, with associated health effects:

  • 0-50: Good
  • 50-100: Moderate
  • 100-200: Poor
  • 200-300: Unhealthy
  • 300-400: Severe
  • 400-500+: Hazardous

Currently, Hyderabad’s AQI is at 69, but locations like Zoo Park reach AQIs of 155, landing in the “poor” category. Conversely, areas like Shirdi Sai Nagar enjoy cleaner air, with an AQI of 34.

Particulate Matter (PM) Pollutants
Two types of particulate matter, PM10 and PM2.5, are major contributors to Hyderabad’s air pollution:

  • PM10 (10 micrometers in diameter): Comes from dust and smoke. The city’s PM10 level is 70 µg/m³.
  • PM2.5 (2.5 micrometers or smaller): More harmful as it can enter deep into the lungs. The current PM2.5 level is 30 µg/m³.

Health Comparison
Per Berkeley Earth’s guideline, every 22 µg/m³ of PM2.5 is roughly equivalent to smoking one cigarette a day. Hyderabad’s PM2.5 level of 30 µg/m³ means that merely breathing the air is like smoking 1.4 cigarettes daily.

Conclusion
Air pollution in Hyderabad is a pressing issue, with some areas reaching alarming levels that pose risks to residents’ health, particularly from PM2.5 particles that can impact respiratory and overall health.
