Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus to Lead Bangladesh Interim Government

Yunus is a well-known critic and political opponent of Hasina. He called her resignation the country’s “second liberation day”. She had once called him a “bloodsucker”.

Dhaka: Muhammad Yunus, the Nobel laureate and microfinance pioneer, has been appointed to lead Bangladesh’s interim government following the resignation and departure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amid a student-led mass uprising.

The announcement was made by Joynal Abedin, the press secretary to President Mohammed Shahabuddin. The composition of the Yunus-led government will be determined after consultations with political parties and stakeholders.

The decision followed a lengthy meeting involving student protest leaders, military chiefs, civil society members, and business leaders. Yunus, currently in Paris, is expected to return to Bangladesh soon.

Student leaders expressed satisfaction with the decision, describing the talks as “fruitful.” Additionally, President Shahabuddin dismissed the national police chief and appointed a replacement in response to the deadly protests that led to Hasina’s departure.

Muhammad Yunus is a Bangladeshi social entrepreneur, economist, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. He is best known for founding the Grameen Bank and pioneering the concepts of microcredit and microfinance, which provide small loans to impoverished individuals without requiring collateral. This approach aims to empower the poor, particularly women, by enabling them to start small businesses and lift themselves out of poverty.

Born on June 28, 1940, in Chittagong, Bangladesh, Yunus received his Ph.D. in Economics from Vanderbilt University in the United States. His innovative banking model has been replicated in many developing countries, making a significant impact on global poverty reduction efforts.

In 2006, Yunus and the Grameen Bank were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to create economic and social development from below. Yunus has also written several books and continues to be an influential figure in the field of social business and economic development.
