Lord Jagannath, “is Modi’s bhakt”, Sambit Patra Says “Slip of Tongue”

New Delhi: BJP’s Sambit Patra caused controversy with a comment that offended Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik during the Lok Sabha and assembly elections. Patra claimed that Lord Jagannath, the deity of Puri, “is Modi’s bhakt.” Naveen Patnaik condemned the statement on social media, calling it an insult to the Lord and offensive to devotees. Patra clarified it was a “slip of tongue” and that he meant Modi is a devotee of Jagannath. Despite his clarification, the comment drew widespread condemnation from political leaders and the public.

Congress’s Supriya Shrinate also criticized the comment, posting, “Lord Jagannath is a devotee of Modi… What has happened to the BJP people? Such an insult to our beloved God? This arrogance will come to an end.”

On social media, many demanded a public apology from the BJP leader.
