Link all 185 Tanks in Hyderabad to Avoid Floods in Future, Experts

Hyderabad: Experts from Engineers and irrigation faculty have proposed for linking all the 185 tanks that are present in the Hyderabad using the latest technologies to divert flood flow and prevent flood of low-lying areas in the city in future.

The experts considered that the restoration of nalas by eliminating encroachment will ease the burden on the flow of flood water. A detailed report with all optional suggestions from the experts will be submitted to CM KCR and MAUD Minister KTR.

Experts from Engineers and irrigation faculty including academicians held a meeting about the recent rains and floods in Hyderabad city at a meeting. They discussed the root causes for the flash floods and solutions to prevent similar floods in future.

  • Anil Kumar, Irrigation projects Engineer-in-Chief,
  • Sathi Reddy, Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation retired chief engineer,
  • PG Sastry, NIT-Warangal former director,
  • Shekhar Reddy, GHMC Superintendent Engineer (Lakes)
  • Gopal Nayak, Osmania University Civil Engineering department head, and
  • Saibaba Reddy, JNTU former vice-chancellor.

A study conducted by the OU Civil Engineering department discovered that about 46% of areas were flooded for the first time, 33% areas were inundated for second or third time, and 21% per cent areas were submerged for several times in the past.

The irrigation experts suggested that the surplus water from Osman Sagar Tank and Himayat Sagar Tank should be connected to the Musi River the catchment by eliminating the encroachments and enlarging the channels to release flood water downstream.

They stressed to for a sewerage treatment plant to treat drainage water being released into Musi River using the latest technology. They said all major problems that affect the city’s storm water drainage system can be easily solved.
