Kerala Nurses in Delhi Demands Apology Over ‘Don’t Speak in Malayalam’ Order

New Delhi: A government circular on 5th June at Govind Ballabh Pant Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (GIPMER) barring nursing staff at Delhi government-run GIPMER hospital to converse in Malayalam. All Kerala nurses were advised to speak only Hindi and English.

However, the government order was later withdrawn stating that the order was issued without the instructions or knowledge of the hospital administration and Delhi government.

The Malayali nurses’ union in Delhi has wanted a written apology and “serious action” against those responsible for issuing such orders.

Fameer CK, representative of Delhi Action Committee of Malayali Nurses said, “It was really shocking for us. We feel that it is a threat to our linguistic freedom. We need an apology from the concerned person as they have humiliated the whole state”.
