Washington: U.S. President Joe Biden has dropped out of the 2024 presidential race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee to face Republican Donald Trump in the November election. Biden, 81, cited the best interest of his party and country as reasons for his withdrawal and announced he would continue to serve as President until his term ends in January 2025.
Biden’s decision came after a series of events, including a poor debate performance, pressure from fellow Democrats, and concerns over his mental acuity and its impact on the party’s chances in the upcoming election. Harris, 59, aims to unite the Democratic Party and secure the nomination ahead of the Democratic National Convention in August. She would be the first Black woman to lead a major-party ticket if nominated.
Support for Harris is building within the party, with endorsements from prominent figures like California Governor Gavin Newsom, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. The North Carolina Democratic delegation has also unanimously endorsed Harris. This transition marks the first time in over fifty years that an incumbent U.S. president has stepped down from seeking re-election.
