Jagan Reddy, Andhra CM Declares War on Justice Ramana, Next-in-Line to be Chief Justice of India

In a letter to CJI S.A. Bobde, Y. Jagan Mohan Reddy accused Justice N.V. Ramana of corruption and of plotting against his government on behalf of TDP leader Chadra Babu Naidu. The letter is dated October 6, the same day Jagan met Prime Minister Modi in Delhi.

In an extraordinary move, AP Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy has objected to the Chief Justice SA Bobde against a most senior judge Ramana of the Supreme Court, who is seen as Next-in-Line to be Chief Justice of India”.

AP Chief Minister ongoing confrontation with the higher judiciary took a dramatic turn and made several serious allegations against the judge Ramana, claiming he was acting on behalf of the opposition Telugu Desam Party and that he was remarkably close to former chief minister Chandrababu Naidu.

CM allegations in a letter to Chief Justice of India SA. Bobde – maybe the first time in the republic’s history that a sitting chief minister has formally accused a sitting supreme court judge of political bias and even corruption.

In an appendix to the letter to Chief Justice Bobde, the Chief Minister has stated “pain and anguish” that the “august institution of the high court is being used to destabilize and topple the democratically elected government”.

The CM’s letter also alleged that the Supreme Court judge was influencing the AP High Court and names the High court Chief Justice and four other judges.

It has been claimed the high court judges, who have been named, were included to handle the cases that were important for Chandrababu Naidu and the TDP.

The Chief Minister has listed out cases and examples and shared documents claiming they were evidence of judgments in favor of the Telugu Desam leaders and which allegedly “obstructed the work of his own government, both in policy decisions and investigations initiated to expose alleged corruption during the time of Chandrababu Naidu as chief minister”.

Jagan Reddy, has asked the Chief Justice of India to “consider initiating such steps as may be considered fit and proper to ensure that the state judiciary’s neutrality is maintained”.

The move comes days after Reddy met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 6, and with Union home minister Amit Shah a few days earlier.

The ‘media note’ issued by AP Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy made further allegations:

  • “Since the new government undertook the enquiry into the  actions of Sri N. Chandrababu Naidu in his regime between 2014-2019, it is now clear, that Sri Justice N. V. Ramana, started influencing the course of administration of justice in the State, through the Chief Justice Sri Jitendra Kumar Maheswari.”
  • “Roster for sitting of the Honorable Judges, whereby important matters of policy and protection for Chandrababu Naidu’s interests were posted before a few Honorable Judges – Justice A.V. Sesha Sai, Justice M. Satyanarayana Murthy, Justice D.V. S.S. Somayyajulu, Justice D. Ramesh.”
