Iran President Ebrahim Raisi, FM killed in Helicopter Crash

Tehran: Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has been confirmed dead following a helicopter crash in a mountainous and forested region of the country amid poor weather conditions.

Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will assume presidential duties in accordance with the Iranian Constitution, which mandates that the first vice president takes over until an election is held within a maximum of 50 days.

The crash also claimed the life of Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, a seasoned diplomat instrumental in the recent thaw in relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Tributes and condolences are pouring in from regional and international leaders, with several Middle Eastern countries offering support and assistance in locating the helicopter, which was missing for hours after the crash.

Severe fog and rain in the Dizmar forest, situated between the cities of Varzaqan and Jolfa in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province, hampered the search efforts. Aviation expert and former helicopter pilot Paul Beaver noted that the combination of cloud cover, fog, mist, and low temperatures likely contributed to the tragic accident.
