Saroornagar Lake Overflows onto Nearby Roads, Homes, and Shops

Hyderabad: Saroornagar Lake in Hyderabad overflowed due to continuous rain, flooding nearby roads and residential areas. The lake, once a peaceful city spot, is now a concern because of illegal encroachments on its full tank level and buffer zones. These encroachments, including houses and small businesses built on what was originally lake land, have reduced the lake’s capacity to hold water, causing overflow during heavy rains.

Local residents and business owners are severely impacted. S. Ramesh, who has lived near the lake for five years, mentioned that water frequently flows out of the lake during rain, sometimes entering his home. Amina Begum, who runs a grocery store close to the lake, is worried about water pooling outside and is considering temporarily closing her shop if the situation worsens. The overflow highlights ongoing issues with urban planning and the need to address illegal construction in vulnerable areas.

Death Toll and Missing Persons:

At least nine people have died due to the floods caused by heavy rains in Telangana. This number may increase as some individuals remain missing after being washed away in different districts.
A young scientist, Nunavath Ashwini, and her father were washed away in their car while en route to Hyderabad airport. Efforts to locate her father, Nunavath Motilal, are still ongoing.
In Khammam-Kothagudem districts, nine people trapped on Munneru bridge at Prakash Nagar are yet to be rescued. Five others who went to see the Akeru stream were washed away and are still missing.
In Kusumanchi mandal’s Nayakangudem, a house wall collapsed, and three individuals were swept away. A youth named Sharif was rescued, but his parents remain missing.

Hyderabad Declares School, Colleges Holiday on Monday – Yellow Alert for Heavy Rains

Hyderabad: In response to a yellow alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Hyderabad district administration has declared a holiday for all primary and secondary schools in the district on Monday, September 2. This decision, announced by the Hyderabad Collector, follows a review meeting with higher officials concerning the ongoing heavy rains in the city.

Hyderabad has experienced continuous rain for almost 24 hours, affecting daily activities, including commutes to workplaces and schools. The IMD has forecasted a moderate to heavy rainfall spell across all zones in Hyderabad over the next 24 hours, prompting an advisory for residents to stay safe and indoors.

The holiday has been declared as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of schoolchildren amid the adverse weather conditions. The closure applies to all government, aided, and private schools in the district.

Additionally, Hyderabad residents have been advised to avoid going out unless necessary, as heavy rains are expected to continue in Hyderabad and surrounding districts until September 3. While the state is under a red alert, Hyderabad remains under a yellow alert, indicating caution for possible moderate to heavy rainfall.
