Mumbai: In a tragic road rage incident in Malad East, Mumbai, 28-year-old Hyderabad resident Akash Maeen was brutally beaten to death in front of his wife and parents on October 12, 2024. Akash, who worked at a tech company in Hyderabad and was visiting his parents for Navratri, was attacked by a mob of 9-10 men after a heated argument with an autorickshaw driver, Avinash Kadam.
Akash and his wife were on a motorcycle, returning from a car showroom, when Kadam overtook them, nearly hitting their bike. This led to an altercation between the two. Kadam then called his friends, forming a mob that violently assaulted Akash. Despite his parents’ attempts to intervene and protect him, the attackers showed no mercy. They continued kicking and punching Akash even after his mother, Deepali, tried to shield him with her own body.
Bystanders recorded the attack but did not intervene. Akash fought back, injuring two of his attackers, but was ultimately overpowered. His father, Dattatreya, called the police, who managed to arrest a few attackers while the rest fled. Akash was rushed to Balasaheb Thackeray TraumaCare Hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries later that night due to delayed medical attention.
The police arrested nine suspects, Kadam (the auto driver), Amit Vishwakarma, Aditya Singh, Jaiprakash Amte, Rakesh Dhagle, Sahil Kadam, Akshay Pawar, Pratikesh Surve and Vaibhav Sawant, all of whom have been remanded into custody until October 22. Akash’s mother, a local MNS functionary, expressed grief and demanded the harshest punishment for the accused, lamenting that her son’s future and their dreams had been destroyed. Akash had recently married and was planning to return to Mumbai for a job with an airline.
