From Political Spotlight to Arrest: Hamid Engineer, Who Met PM Modi, Arrested in Nagpur Violence

Nagpur: Mohammad Hamid Engineer, founder of the Minorities Democratic Party (MDP), has had a turbulent career, from being a government engineer to a vocal activist for the Barelvi Sunni sect. He first gained prominence in 2002 when he led an agitation in Nagpur to reclaim a Sunni mosque from the Tablighi Jamaat. His influence grew as he criticized Deobandi and Wahhabi ideologies, and in 2009, he launched the MDP to promote Sufi-centric politics.

In 2015, he was part of a Muslim delegation that met PM Narendra Modi, where he warned about Wahhabi influence in Sunni institutions. Despite contesting elections in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, his party failed to gain political traction.

Recently, Engineer was arrested by Nagpur Police for allegedly instigating violence linked to protests over Aurangzeb’s tomb. His arrest follows the detention of MDP functionary Fahim Khan, accused of orchestrating the unrest.
