Around 1.5 Tonnes Fish Found Dead in Lake Sangareddy Dist, Telangana

Hyderabad: A large number of dead fish were discovered floating in a lake at Chitkul village of Sangareddy district on Monday evening. Officials attributed the mass mortality to a depletion of dissolved oxygen in the water body.

The lake, spanning 230 acres, saw an increase in “organic load” due to the release of sewage water, which led to a significant drop in oxygen levels. Approximately 1.5 tonnes of dead fish were found along the banks. Following immediate measures to raise the dissolved oxygen levels, the mortality rate of the fish has decreased, according to a Fisheries Department official.

Local fishermen, who noticed the issue on Monday, expressed confusion over the cause and emphasized their dependency on the lake, with about 100 families relying on it for their livelihood. They have appealed to the government for ex-gratia support to mitigate their losses.
