First Phase of Umrah Pilgrimage to Resume from 4th October: Saudi Arabia

The first phase of the start of Umrah will include allowing citizens and residents (expatriates) from within the Kingdom to perform Umrah at a capacity of 30 percent from 4th  October (17th Safar 1442 H), which is equivalent of 6,000 Umrah pilgrims per day.

Riyadh: Saudi Arabia government said on Tuesday it will begin allowing pilgrims to perform Umrah in three stages, while taking the appropriate precautions for CoronaVirus.

Saudi Press Agency in a statement said the decision was made after evaluating the developments of the CoronaVirus and in response to the aspiration of Muslims around the world to perform the Umrah pilgrimage.

First Phase:

The first phase of the start of Umrah will include allowing citizens and residents (expatriates) from within the Kingdom to perform Umrah at a capacity of 30 percent from 4th  October (17th Safar 1442 H), which is equivalent of 6,000 Umrah pilgrims per day.

Second Phase:

The second phase will raise the capacity of the Grand Mosque to 75 percent, from 18th October (1st Rabi Al Awal 1442 H), which estimated to 15,000 Umrah pilgrims and 40,000 worshippers per day.

Third Phase:

In the third phase, International pilgrims would be allowed to perform Umrah with 100 percent capacity, from 1st November (15th Rabi Al Awal 1442 H) equivalent to 20,000 Umrah pilgrims and 60,000 worshippers per day.

Fourth Phase:

The fourth and final stage will see the Grand Mosque return welcome all pilgrims and worshippers as normal, when all the COVID-19 risks have gone away.

The entry of Umrah pilgrims, worshippers and visitors will be controlled through an application called “I’tamarna.” The app is to be introduced by the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, with the aim of implementing health requirements and make it easier for pilgrims to book their journeys.

The Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Hajj and Umrah called on all people attending the holy sites to adhere to the preventive measures, wear face masks, maintain a safe distance from others, and refrain from physical contact.

The ministry further said Saudi Arabia wants to “empower pilgrims, both from inside and outside the Kingdom, to be able to perform “the ritual in a safe and healthy manner,” while protecting them from the threats of the pandemic.”
