Hyderabad: In a tragic incident in Hyderabad, a massive fire broke out around 1 am on Wednesday in a furniture unit-cum-residential complex at Venkateswaranagar, Jiyaguda. The fire claimed the lives of three family members: Gorakanti Srinivas, a carpenter, and his two daughters, G. Shiva Priya (10) and G. Harini (5). Srinivas’s wife, G. Nagamani, is critically injured with 50% burns.
The fire, caused by a short circuit in the basement, spread rapidly due to the presence of adhesive solutions, chemicals, and furniture. The building housed over 21 people, who were trapped by the thick, poisonous smoke. The intense blaze damaged adjacent buildings, destroyed live wires, internet cables, and seven bikes, and caused a power outage.
Two workers, Hassan Ali and Mohammed Safaul Ansari, jumped from the second floor and sustained fractures but are in stable condition.
The Kulsumpura police received a call at 1.22 am and responded with eight firefighters, including the Circle fire brigade and DRF teams. The fire was difficult to combat due to its intensity and the building’s location at the end of a narrow lane, which delayed firefighting efforts. Despite these challenges, 11 people were rescued from the building, and the fire was extinguished by 7 am.
Police have arrested Dhananjay Bandsal, the owner of the furniture unit and the building, on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 106 of the BNS Act.
