CoWIN Data Hacked, 150 Million User Data for Sale, Health Ministry, Researchers Deny

The CoWin website was hacked by the dark Leak market and data of 150 million users for sale, viral messages on various social media and websites reported late on Thursday evening.

Dark Tracer, in their tweet, stated that information about 150 million vaccinated people in India is at stake.

On June 10, Data Leak Market was selling a database of Covid-19 vaccination in India for $800.

Vaccination data of 150 million people, including name, Aadhaar number, and location, were included. “We are not the original leaker of data. We are the reseller,” the message read.

To avail of the vaccine in India, the vaccine-registration portal CoWin made it mandatory for people in the country for individual information which includes a person’s name, mobile number, Aadhar ID, and GPS for registration.  With this, it is understood that the website has already acquired a database of millions of users through the process.

However, The Health Ministry and security researchers denied the breach. as news of the hack spread on the internet, sparking panic, and issued a statement on 10th June as…

“No Co-WIN data is shared with any entity outside the CoWIN environment” There have been some unfounded media reports of the CoWIN platform being hacked. Prima facie, these reports appear to be fake. However, the Union Health Ministry and the Empowered Group on Vaccine Administration (EGVAC) are getting the matter investigated by the Computer Emergency Response Team of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Miety).

Dr. R S Sharma, Chairman of the Empowered Group on Vaccine Administration (Co-WIN) has clarified that “Our attention has been drawn towards the news circulating on social media about the alleged hacking of Co-WIN system. In this connection, we wish to state that Co-WIN stores all the vaccination data in a safe and secure digital environment. No Co-WIN data is shared with any entity outside the Co-WIN environment. The data being claimed as having been leaked such as geo-location of beneficiaries is not even collected at Co-WIN.”
