Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy emphasized the importance of constructing a new Osmania General Hospital (OGH) with a long-term vision during a meeting on August 27. The hospital, to be relocated to Goshamahal, is being planned with a 50-year perspective. The current Osmania General Hospital’s heritage building will be restored, while the new facility will be constructed on 30 acres at the site of the old police quarters.
During the meeting, Reddy highlighted the need for the speedy completion of land transfers and stressed the importance of planning road connectivity to avoid traffic congestion. An alternative site for the Goshamahal City Police Academy will be selected. This initiative follows earlier plans by the previous government to demolish the old hospital building, which faced opposition from heritage activists.

Hyderabad: The foundation stone for the new Osmania General Hospital (OGH) will be laid within the next 20 days on the land of the old police quarters in Goshamahal.
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy announced that the new OGH building will be constructed on 30 acres in Goshamahal, while the existing heritage building will be restored. This announcement was made in response to a query by AIMIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi in the Assembly.
Previously, the BRS government, led by K Chandrashekhar Rao (KCR), had planned to demolish the heritage structure to build a new hospital. The plan included constructing a modern hospital with 1,812 beds, but it faced criticism from heritage activists.
In its election manifesto, the Congress party promised to preserve the heritage building while developing state-of-the-art healthcare infrastructure. However, there were reports that the Congress government also considered demolishing the structure.
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi previously suggested tearing down the heritage building, which led to backlash from activists. Despite the deteriorating condition of Osmania Hospital’s infrastructure, the heritage building, built in the 1920s by Hyderabad’s last Nizam, occupies only three of the total 26 acres of the premises.
Architect Srinivas Murthy and other activists have proposed alternatives, highlighting that there is enough space to construct a new hospital without demolishing the heritage structure.
